Director-General condemns murder of journalist Luis Enrique Ramirez in Mexico

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has denounced the killing of veteran journalist Luis Enrique Ramirez, whose body was found in the city of Culiacan, in northwestern Mexico, on 5 May.
I condemn the murder of Luis Enrique Ramirez. The killing of Ramirez once again reminds us of the high toll journalists are paying in the exercise of their role as society’s watchdogs. It is therefore of fundamental importance for society as a whole that the perpetrators of this crime be brought to justice and that measures be taken to strengthen protection mechanisms to ensure a safe working environment for journalists.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
