UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of journalist Héritier Magayane in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the night of 7 August.

I condemn the murder of Héritier Magayane. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Impunity must not be allowed to embolden those who use violence to stop journalists from doing their job.
Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Unidentified assailants are reported to have slit the throat of Radio-Télévision nationale congolaise (RTNC) journalist Héritier Magayane, who hosted youth programmes that promoted peace in the region.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
