Diversity Sustains Life exhibition
International Geodiversity Day
6 October 2022 marks the first International Geodiversity Day, celebrated to highlight the significance of geoscience in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and other international development agendas. The International Geodiversity Day provides an annual reminder to the critical link between geodiversity and all aspects of life, and showcases how geoscience education provides humanity with sustainable solutions to the challenges of resource extraction, disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity loss.
Diversity Sustains Life exhibition and UNESCO Geologic Walk
The exhibition "Diversity Sustains Life", held from 5 to 19 October 2022 in celebration of the Day, showcases the extent of society’s dependence on geodiversity, demonstrated by examples taken from UNESCO Global Geoparks and other locations. These ranges from the modern smartphone, which contains over 60 different chemical elements extracted from the Earth’s crust to the ancient and enduring cultural bond between indigenous peoples and rocks beneath their feet. This event is accompanied by a Geologic Walk at UNESCO Headquarters, organized by UNESCO on 5 October 2022.
