To mark its 60th Anniversary, IIEP is presenting six key thematic areas for planning education for a stronger, more equitable future.
The thematic areas, which are integrated throughout IIEP’s training, research, and technical cooperation offer, include:
- Planning and management to improve learning,
- Planning and management for equity and inclusion in education,
- Promoting good governance and transparency in educational management and financing,
- Enhancing digital technology to transform education,
- Planning and management for crises, climate change, and natural hazards,
- Planning for skills and the transition to work.

A vision built on innovation
To keep relevant in the future, educational planning must keep pace with, and adapt to, the many changes reshaping our world. From globalization, rapid urbanization, and vast technological advancements to the perils of conflict and climate change, there are a myriad of factors influencing the current and future state of education.
To ensure robust planning and implementation of educational policies and plans, educational planners and managers must stay updated on new approaches to planning, constantly update their practices, and use new tools.
As a learning institute and an observatory of innovations, IIEP both stays abreast of new trends and contributes to how planning evolves. Through an integrated approach to capacity development, IIEP has a foresight function and is constantly nourishing its offer to countries with findings and experiences derived from its research and development, training, and technical cooperation.
Transforming education systems and adopting new forms of learning cannot remain a distant ambition. IIEP stands ready to help countries face complex and simultaneous challenges to achieve their education goals.
The use and management of data for planning are also central to IIEP’s work. Robust information systems – especially after COVID-19 – are critical for education systems to be inclusive, transparent, resilient, flexible, and oriented to student learning.
Information is not only a fundamental resource for the generation of relevant, sustainable, and evidence-based education policies, but it also allows for proper monitoring and evaluation of the progress of educational goals at a national, regional, and global level (especially of those established in Sustainable Development Goal 4) and is an indispensable resource for the modernization of education processes.
This means that educational planners and managers need to strengthen their capacities linked to the use of data, as well as keep up to date with the possibilities and scope of information systems, which are in constant evolution.
IIEP is at the forefront of dialogue around the use and management of data for education through training, technical cooperation, and knowledge production and sharing, based on the understanding that this is a cross-cutting aspect of the work of ministries of education.
