International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrated at UNESCO
When, local time: Monday, 3 December 2018 – 14.45 p.m. – 19.30 p.m.
Where: UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France (Room I)
UNESCO invites you to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December 2018 at its Headquarters in Paris. This is an important occasion to raise awareness about the complexity of disability issues and about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities all over the world. This year’s theme focuses on empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their inclusiveness and equality in society, encouraging the combined action of multiple stakeholders in order to “leave no one behind”.
The half-day event will also include the award ceremony of the UNESCO/Emir Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. With this Prize, UNESCO and the State of Kuwait recognize outstanding contributions by individuals and organizations who have successfully promoted the inclusion and the enhancement of the lives of persons with disabilities through the effective and innovative application of digital solutions. The theme will be further explored during the high-level panel discussion led by international speakers and experts in the area of disabilities, as well as by keynote speakers – including Ms Lucy Hawking, Vice President of the National Star College and daughter of Prof. Stephen Hawking - who will open the ceremony on 3 December 2018.
The Day will include as well a rich cultural programme with extraordinary performances by UNESCO’s Artists for Peace Mr Eijin Nimura, internationally renown Japanese violinist, and Miss Jane Constance from Mauritius, winner of the French television competition The Voice Kids in 2015, and by artists with disabilities who performed in the Asia-Pacific “True Colours Festival” (Singapore, March 2018).
The event is open to the public, and particularly to persons with disabilities, their friends, family, and colleagues. Your participation in this important event will enhance the celebration of persons with disabilities as empowered agents of change.
