Obituary Prof. Ajmal Khan

Professor Dr Ajmal Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi, passed away on Saturday the 4th of May, 2019.

Dr. Ajmal worked with UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector for a period of 20 years. Prof. Khan was one of the global key-drivers of halophyte research, and it was him and his colleagues, who put Pakistan on the world map as a country with significant achievements and capacity in this important scientific subject.

It was based on his efforts that the Institute for Sustainable Halophyte Utilization (ISHU) was established at the University of Karachi. ISHU’s scientific contributions were truly remarkable, not only by the vast number of peer reviewed publications, but in particular also for gender equality and the mobilization of young scientists in the natural sciences.

UNESCO is very thankful to Dr. Ajmal Khan, for his friendship, and his professional long-term partnership. Dr. Ajmal generously gave his time and expertise that benefitted numerous UNESCO supported events in China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Morocco, Pakistan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. He also functioned as editor-in-chief, co-editor, and author in the ‘Sabkha Ecosystem’ book series, that was supported by UNESCO and published at Springer.

Dr. Ajmal was a scientific visionary, thinking ‘out of the box’, ahead of our time.

Dr. Ajmal was also a very good friend, always helpful and positively minded. He was a great team-leader and very much appreciated by his colleagues and his students.

May his soul rest in peace.
