UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova meets with President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka

Sunday, 29 November – On the eve of the Conference of Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change in Paris, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, met with the President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, to discuss the upcoming conference and the continued cooperation between Sri Lanka and UNESCO across the full spectrum of the Organization’s fields of competence. As UNESCO celebrates its 70th Anniversary, its programmes in the areas of education, science and culture contribute to any sustainable response to climate change.

The President said that Sri Lanka intends to actively engage in shaping and advancing the UN post 2015 agenda in education for sustainable development. To this effect, Sri Lanka has decided to offer three scholarships in the field of water and water resource management for Africa, climate change and its impact on small island developing states as well as promoting gender equality.
