UNESCO Brings Together All Government Partners in Japan at Annual Review Meeting
On 27 and 28 February 2020 UNESCO hosted the 2020 Annual Review meeting with Japan to review programmes funded through voluntary contributions from Japan and plan for the future For the first time the meeting brought together all UNESCOs main government partners in Japan including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Ministry of Education Culture Sports Science and Technology MEXT as well as the Ministry of Land Infrastructure Transport and Tourism and the Japan International Cooperation Agency with the Japan Agency for MarineEarth Science and Technology connecting from Tokyo by skype  Together these partners support a portfolio of active projects with UNESCO in excess of $ 58 million   On behalf of the DirectorGeneral  JeanYves Le Saux Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning of UNESCO expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of Japan for its commitment to provide long term predictable support that was highly aligned with the expected results of UNESCOs programme He also thanked the Government for standing boldly by UNESCO in addressing major new challenges relating to the ethical dimension of Artificial Intelligence the Futures of Education the Decade of Ocean Sciences as well as the flagship initiative Revive the Spirit of Mosul The meeting was also the opportunity to review recently approved large scale programmes for Afghanistan including a $7 million nonformal education programme and a programme for the Sustainable Management of the World Heritage Property in Bamiyan for which UNESCO and Japan signed a $ 39 million agreement earlier in the week

In memory of Pilar Luna, Mexican underwater archeologist that left us on March 15, 2020
Pilar LUNA was a pioneer in the protection and management for underwater cultural heritage As a woman of science from Latin America and the Caribbean she inspired many more in the region to the point that gender parity is a reality in the field of underwater archaeology in this part of the world Her enthusiasm and true passion to protect and preserve our common heritage under the waters of our planet made many people from the general public to the highest politicians conscious of the need to be aware of this enormous rich resource of our past that is in need of active protection The protection against natural degradation but also ignorance and greed was an important focus in her life She lead the Center for Underwater Archeology of the INAH Instituto Nacional de Arqueología e Historia of Mexico during 37 years and even after her retirement she continued to collaborate with INAH in a number of research and capacity building projects In the global arena Pilar an active member of the Mexican Delegation to the numerous consultations meetings at UNESCO that resulted in the creation of the 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage Her support to the region continued in the ratification processes of this important instrument as well as helped establishing the necessary capacities and structures for its appropriate implementation Pilar was a member of the Scientific Technical Advisory Body of the UNESCO Convention STAB and of the ICOMOS International Committee for Underwater Cultural Heritage ICUCH Today the region counts with twenty state parties to the 2001 Convention which make a strong and united force against treasure hunting indifference or unethical exploitation of its underwater cultural heritage She encouraged and organized many trainings and capacity building initiatives in her home country Mexico and elsewhere in the region always ready to participate and brake any barriers to accomplish the goal of ensuring sustainable continuation of the work that she and many colleagues of her generation achieved Thanks to Pilar LUNA many underwater archeologists now working within their national institutions or in university programmes in the region will ensure that her efforts continue Although Pilars desire to seize every moment of life was something she transmitted to anyone that had the fortune of working with her and learn from her she also knew that every day on earth is a gift that could be taken away any minute This probably was behind her eagerness to teach and leave a solid legacy She contributed to a strong network of underwater archaeologists in Latin America and the Caribbean Region that work together know what solidarity is and strive to make this profession flourish in our countries Today thanks to the work she started the underwater archaeology of the Region is internationally recognized and present in scientific conferences and symposia Pilar was also an unconditional friend ready to listen and help anyone that reached out to her Her generosity was also a great gift She knew well that although our work is to understand humankind through its material world we do not take it with us when we go Her best gift to us was her knowledge which is a torch she passed on to younger generations of underwater archaeologists and heritage managers to continue lighting up the way and to pass in on when their turn comes Nevertheless although all of us who knew her and worked with her are profoundly sad there is a strong feeling of her presence as an inspiring force that pushes us to continue working for what she taught us to love and understand the most our cultural heritage preserved in the depths of our Oceans Seas Rivers and Lakes She acts already beyond expectations as a patron for underwater archeologists May your voyage be happy and your sailing smooth

Activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Cintio Vitier, poet (1921-2009) (Cuba, with the support of Dominican Republic and Uruguay)
Several Cuban institutions joint efforts to commemorate Centenary of Cintio Vitiers birth which will be held on September 25th Vitier is a great Cuban poet narrator literary critic and essayist also considered the most important student of the work of the National Hero of Cuba José Martí The newsletter El Correo de la Biblioteca wwwbnjmcu dedicates its fourth number to him in its entirety In addition to announcing the activities that will take place for the tribute to Cintio Vitier this publication lists some of the most important titles of the intellectual and is illustrated with photos of him in the National Library of Cuba where we worked between 1962 and 1977   The main celebration will take place on September 24 at the headquarters of the José Martí National Library BNJM and will include the following activities Presentation of this years first issue of the José Martí National Library Magazine dedicated to Cintio Vitier and the 120th anniversary of the BNJM Opening of the bibliographic exhibition of Cintio Vitiers work Unveiling of two commemorative plaques one in the Martí Hall and the other in the Vitier˗García Marruz cubicle where both intellectuals worked These and other activities that will accompany the celebration are part of the program designed by the Ministry of Culture of Cuba the Cuban Book Institute the Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba the Cuban Institute of Music the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO the Center for José Martí Studies and the VitierGarcía Marruz House among other institutions and personalities Cintio Vitier was born on September 25th 1921 in Key West Florida from Cuban parents In 1938 was published his first poetry book Poemas with the introduction of Juan Ramón Jiménez He graduated from Law School at Havana University in 1947 the same year that he married the writer Fina García Marruz Citio Vitier was professor at Las Villas Central University an also worked at the General Direction of Culture of Ministry of Education Then he worked at the National Library for 15 years In 1977 Cintio Vitier was among the founders of the Center for José Martí Studies where he was in charge of the Critical Edition of Complete Work of José Martí He published several books of poems essays and novels like Rajando la leña está Critics Awards 1986 He received the National Price of Literature in 1988 the Juan Rulfo Award in 2002 and the Jose Marti Order the highest civil medal of the Republic of Cuba He was member of the Cuban Academy of Science and deputy to the Cuban Parliament  Cintio Vitier died on October 1st 2009 in Havana Source Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO

Call for applications - Communication Officer - Transcultura Programme
Photo Canva Studio en Pexels The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean is in charge of the implementation of the UNESCO programme Transcultura Integrating Cuba the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity supported by the European Union The Programme is built on two components the first focusing on strengthening the skills and capacities of young cultural professionals and the second on enhancing opportunities through knowledge transfer and exchanges It includes the establishment of a regional Cultural Training Hub in Cuba and will create opportunities for entrepreneurship socioeconomic projects and collaboration in the cultural and creative sectors heritage and tourism within the Caribbean region and with the European Union The programme was launched at the beginning of 2020 and is expected to last until the end of 2023 A dedicated Communication and Visibility Plan has been defined in line with the Communication and Visibility Manual for EUfunded External Actions and a visual identity for the programme has been developed In the context of the implementation of the programme the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean is looking for a Communication Officer to plan and implement all activities related to internal and external outreach and visibility in line with the programmes Communication and Visibility Plan The overall purpose is raising awareness about the programme and its achievements as well as more globally on the role of the cultural and creative sectors for sustainable development and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals The position is advertised for an initial duration of four months 1 November 2021 to 28 February 2022 with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance The selected candidate will work in close cooperation with a graphic design expert Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean and the direct supervision of the Coordinator of the Transcultura programme the Communication Officer shall Implement the Transcultura Programme Communication and Visibility Plan and propose modifications as appropriate Develop communication messaging and materials for different audiences governments donors partners and the press concerning either the programme as a whole or individual activities Upscale the Transcultura website and ensure its regular update through webnews and other relevant materials Implement media outreach initiatives Monitor information sources news articles academic papers infographics maps videos etc Oversee the production of audiovisual materials videos etc Oversee the work of a photographer and videographer for the Transcultura programme

The jury of the event parallel to the Worldwide Music Expo offWOMEX announced that Yarima Blanco y Son Latino from Cuba the Dominican Republic and Haitian group Azueï and the Blvk H3ro Reggae Soul Band from Jamaica are the winners of the UNESCO TransculturaWOMEX Call among over a hundred competing groups   Another winner as ruled by an independent jury is Cimafunk from Cuba   They were selected from among 108 groups of various formats that applied from Barbados Belize Cuba the Dominican Republic Haiti Jamaica Saint Kitts and Nevis Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago The winning groups will have the opportunity to attend the next edition of WOMEX the Worldwide Music Expo under the auspices of the UNESCO Transcultura Programme Integrating Cuba the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity   From 27 to 31 October these groups will be representing the Caribbean at the event which will take place in the city of Porto Portugal Thanks to this initiative 58 applications from the subregion were sponsored by this Programme implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean and funded by the European Union Sponsoring the applications of groups or soloists from the 17 Member States of the Caribbean Forum CARIFORUM the Caribbean Community CARICOM and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States OECS included in the Programme was the first step of this initiative   These groups will have the opportunity to showcase their music to producers entrepreneurs agents and the general public while interacting with musicians from other regions of the world thereby paving the way to new markets and opportunities for professional growth   The award includes air travel transportation during the event accommodation attendance at the fair and participation in workshops where managers and representatives of the groups will enhance their skills in key aspects of the music industry As a result the UNESCO TransculturaWOMEX initiative will contribute to the professionalisation of young artists international market exposure and the discovery of new job opportunities   The UNESCO Transcultura Programme seeks to contribute to strengthen entrepreneurship and innovation in the cultural and creative industries of the Caribbean With the presence of these young music professionals at WOMEX performers of the widest ranging and vibrant Caribbean rhythms the Programme also aims to promote the understanding of shared intercultural values between the subregion and Europe thereby deepening integration   With this initiative the UNESCO Transcultura Programme uses music as a source of inspiration and motivation for young artists to participate more actively in the sustainable development of their communities and countries
