Director-General condemns killing of photojournalist Christoff Griffith in Barbados
The DirectorGeneral of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay has denounced the killing of Christoff Griffith a photojournalist who died in St Michael in southwest Barbados on 22 June   I condemn the killing of Christoff Griffith said the DirectorGeneral Mr Griffith was attacked while doing his job and I trust that the authorities will be able to bring his murderer to justice It is essential for press freedom and freedom of information everywhere that countries do not let attacks on media practitioners go unpunished   Christoff Griffith was killed in the abandoned former residence of the Anglican Bishop of St Michael where he had gone to cover a murder that took place shortly earlier for The Nation newspaper He arrived at the scene before the police who subsequently arrested a man suspected of both killings   UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awarenessraising capacity building and a range of actions notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity     See also UNESCO observatory of killed journalists Media contact Guilherme Canela De Souza Godoi ggodoiunescoorg

Preparing Caribbean Culture for Natural Disasters
The significance of culture in the lives of communities and individuals serves as an anchor for identity and belonging In times of climate disasters and their devastating impact for Caribbean Small Island Developing States such as Irma Maria and Dorian cultural heritage is at risk and thus the loss of identities for whole societies and nations Recognizing the value and importance of safeguarding cultural heritage in the Caribbean the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO in partnership with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency CDEMA hosted a workshop on Disaster Resilience in the Caribbeans Culture Sector from 11th12th March 2020 in Bridgetown Barbados The workshop brought together participants from the cultural sector among the Caribbean Small Island Developing States as well as national disaster management agencies humanitarian actors and development partners to discuss disaster resilience in the Culture Sector as well as identify opportunities for collaboration between cultural and disaster management practitioners
