Crafting the sea. New directions towards a balanced relationship between societies and their environment
Crafting the sea is a 15month multidisciplinary innovative project aimed at identifying local knowledge for monitoring climate change identifying biodiversity mitigating risks and promoting a more balanced relationship between humans and nature To this end the project focuses on the marine life of the Rovinj archipelago a NATURA2000 protected area in Croatia The first phase of the project which ran from May to October concentrated on identification and research and included a 3day workshop on 1921 October on the nexus between intangible cultural heritage and sustainable humannature relationships

Tools for the protection of cultural and historical heritage in the Sava River Basin
On 19 January 2021 the International Sava River Basin Commission and UNESCO with the support of other SHELTER project partners held successfully online the Sava Open Lab Third Stakeholder workshop Under the guidance of the SHELTER team 28 stakeholders from 6 Member States discussed the results and next steps of the research undertaken within the project The workshop discussed the several tools for cultural and historical heritage in the Sava River Basin and essential future needs of the SHELTER project With the participation of the stakeholders the selected resilience indicators and factsheets for the Sava open lab were also presented during the workshop

UNESCO Brings Together All Government Partners in Japan at Annual Review Meeting
On 27 and 28 February 2020 UNESCO hosted the 2020 Annual Review meeting with Japan to review programmes funded through voluntary contributions from Japan and plan for the future For the first time the meeting brought together all UNESCOs main government partners in Japan including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Ministry of Education Culture Sports Science and Technology MEXT as well as the Ministry of Land Infrastructure Transport and Tourism and the Japan International Cooperation Agency with the Japan Agency for MarineEarth Science and Technology connecting from Tokyo by skype  Together these partners support a portfolio of active projects with UNESCO in excess of $ 58 million   On behalf of the DirectorGeneral  JeanYves Le Saux Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning of UNESCO expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of Japan for its commitment to provide long term predictable support that was highly aligned with the expected results of UNESCOs programme He also thanked the Government for standing boldly by UNESCO in addressing major new challenges relating to the ethical dimension of Artificial Intelligence the Futures of Education the Decade of Ocean Sciences as well as the flagship initiative Revive the Spirit of Mosul The meeting was also the opportunity to review recently approved large scale programmes for Afghanistan including a $7 million nonformal education programme and a programme for the Sustainable Management of the World Heritage Property in Bamiyan for which UNESCO and Japan signed a $ 39 million agreement earlier in the week
