UNESCO - EU Transcultura Programme extends until February 28 its Second Call for Applications for young Caribbean creative professionals

UNESCO hosts international conference to address growing concern on water access in urban centres globally
The 2nd Water Megacities and Global Change conference which is expected to gather over 2 000 participants and takingplace online on 1114 January aims to seek solutions towards resolving the global access to water which is becoming a cause for concern especially in urban areas It is estimated that by 2030 over a billion people will live in approximately 100 very large cities and 60 of the worlds population will live in urban areas Presently the urban population ratio in some regions surpasses 70 and it is projected that population growth in the coming decades will be higher in urban centers and particularly in megacities or metropolitan areas of more than 10 million inhabitants Megacities are found on all continents except Oceania They cover diverse geographical areas with a wide range of climates and are generally located close to rivers lakes or seas The diversity of intellectual technical and financial resources components that exist within megacities is an opportunity for mobilizing these resources so that innovative solutions can emerge and guarantee access to water and sanitation for all populations equality of services economic viability resilience of systems flexibility of solutions and the protection of the natural environment Coorganized by the  Division of Water Sciences of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO with ARCEAUIle de France ARCEAUIdF in collaboration with the Greater Paris Metropolis and the greater Paris Sanitation Authority SIAAP the conference will gather water and sanitation operators decision makers and political representatives of Megacities researchers and students civil society and basin authorities who will meet with the overall goal of enhancing the integration interaction and knowledge exchange between all these majors actors for water management in Megacities in the face of climate change Other major objectives of the conference include Produce a scientific and technical overview of water challenges and solutions that Megacities face and use to mitigate the effects of climate change by concretizing the exchange of their expertise in the specific field of water Strengthen the dialogue between science and policy actors at local level To activate the cooperation platform of the Megacities Alliance for Water and Climate MAWAC by concretizing the exchange of their expertise in the specific field of water and climate To review the Strategic Global Framework of MAWAC prepared by the Working Group of UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme IHP

UNESCO conference focuses on how to prevent conflicts over shared waters
The ISARM 2021 Conference on Transboundary aquifers Challenges and the Way Forward will provide an opportunity to debate new solutions to address the growing competition for shared waters with emphasis on groundwater that invisible component of our planets water cycle which runs beneath our feet on 69 December 2021 The conference will count with more than 200 speakers and around 1000 participants from around the world several highlevel panels and 18 technical sessions Since the conference will be taking place shortly after COP26 it will offer an opportunity to reaffirm commitments to common goals such as that of adapting to climate change by fostering cooperation on aquifers that cross political boundaries This cooperation will take place at the nexus of science policy and governance Reaffirming some these goals in a recent media outing UNESCOs Assistant Director General for Science Dr Shamila NairBedouelle said The importance of cooperation in managing shared water resources in a world where demand is rapidly growing cannot be underestimated Around the world there are 286 transboundary river and lake basins and more than 500 transboundary aquifer systems These transboundary water systems are shared by 153 countries Transboundary waters account for 60 of the worlds freshwater flows and over 40 of the worlds population relies on them for their livelihood This makes cooperation between countries essential to ensure that everyone enjoys water security and that every drop counts Event registration and live streaming  Event information  Follow the event on Twitter by following unescoWATER and  ISARM2021

Climate-resilient Water Management Approaches: Application Towards Climate Action and 2030 Agenda
This threeday conference organized prior to COP26 was expected to raise awareness and build capacity around new approaches to assessing and addressing ClimateResilient Water Management Approaches including their vast potential within global climate policy and sustainable development agendas The first day of the conference began with an overview of the role of water in sustainable development policies The event then moved to a highlevel policy discussion on how these approaches fit into NDCs SDGs and other national climate or development programs The second day brought a complementary set of bottomup approaches to climate adaptation on three discussion panels with selected speakers from the webinar series Adaptation in an age of uncertainty tools for climateresilient water management approaches coorganized by UNESCO AGWA and ICIWARM in 20202021 Finally on the third day highlevel speakers shared their insights on the priorities and ambitions for COP26 followed by a session on practical approaches to institutionalize solutions secure stakeholder engagement and enhance capacity building The event was concluded with a synthesis of the conference to be presented at COP26 The outcomes of the conference will provide inputs to the implementation of the IHP IX 20222029 Science for a water secure World in a Changing Environment This was a truly global conference with a total of 1238 individuals registered online for the threeday conference hailing from 149 countries 658 individuals attended at least one session for a total of 1138 cumulated attendees from 125 countries which represents 53 attendance The gender balance of attendees was distributed as 62 male and 38 female All regional groups were represented at the conference with the African States leading in terms of attendance 361 attendees followed by the AsiaPacific States 356 attendees Additional 472 participants joined the conference through the YouTube live stream The recordings of the three days of the global conference are accesible in the Programme in English and French   Programme   Speakers   Partners   Contact
