All-girl team from the Philippines wins Sustainable Engineering Hackathon on UNESCO’s World Engineering Day
An allgirl team of university students from the Philippines has won a hackathon marking UNESCOs World Engineering for Sustainable Development Day on 4 March Ghia Luwalhati Nicole Elizabeth Tan and Reaner Jacqueline Bool from the WONDERPETS team 1 from Batangas State University in the Philippines used Metal Organic Frameworks which are novel adsorbents to turn recycled plastic bottles into a type of sponge that is extremely porous making it an effective means of removing pollutants from water Better still the sponge can be used again and again

Confronting the gender gap in environmental education
A global citizen and lifelong learner with a deeprooted passion for the environment and sustainable development Devonne Goad is an education consultant at UNESCO She has been tasked with projectbased policy analysis assessments and evaluations across the region of SouthEast Europe and the Mediterranean She wrote the UNESCO publications Mapping the Mainstreaming of Education for Sustainable Development Across SDG47 A Comparative Analysis of the Mainstreaming of ESD in Cyprus Greece Malta and Turkey and Scoping the Implementation of Education for Sustainable Development in SouthEast Europe Including the Impact of COVID19 forthcoming She contributed to publication The Intersection of gender equality and quality education in four Mediterranean countries a regional situation analysis of the nexus between SDG4 and SDG5 in Cyprus Greece Malta and Turkey Prior to obtaining her Masters degree in Environmental Resource Management she worked in community education projects in South America focusing on climate change and ecology She was also an English as Second Language ESL teacher

Montreal, Creative City of Design, strengthens its support to artists facing COVID-19
Montreal a UNESCO Creative City of Design is the largest metropolis in the Province of Quebec Canada With over 25000 professionals working in the design sector Montreal emphasizes the role design plays in ensuring the development of the city which is ecologically sustainable economically viable socially equitable and culturally diverse Given the significant impact on the COVID19 pandemic on the creative and cultural economy the city of Montreal recently launched new support measures for artists and culture practitioners These initiatives are being implemented in line with the ongoing strategy to emphasize Montreals creative potential and ensure better recognition for designers raising awareness of the talents of Montreal designers and architects and developing their creative markets In light of the exceptional circumstances the Conseil des arts de Montréal Arts Council of Montreal which funds and promote nearly 500 artistic companies and collectives announced its intention to maintain its financial commitments and accelerate the payment of grants under several of its programs Recognizing the significant pressures faced by the arts and culture sector the Council has advanced funds for 13 million CAD approximately10 million USD representing 76 of the grants planned for the year 2020 This is providing support to the entire value chain from creation to production and dissemination The Council thus provides financial assistance to cultural professionals who are beneficiaries of its various support programs such as the tax sponsorship grant program for visual arts and fine crafts artists in the city In addition the Council encourage organizations and collectives under the program to meet the commitments signed with artists For more information kindly visit httpswwwartsmontrealorgennews20200331covidaccelerationofgrantpayments
