Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today It occurs in every country and in every context Humanitarian emergencies natural disasters and global pandemics put women and girls at increased risk of violence The current COVID19 crisis is no exception 26 billion people are currently confined to their homes to slow the spread of Covid19 But being at home doesnt always mean being safe  As the pandemic deepens there is an exponential increase in genderbased violence United Nations SecretaryGeneral António Guterres has made a global appeal for peace everywhere In war zones and in homes UNESCO is working with other UN agencies through the Global Spotlight Initiative and its WithHer campaign to scale up activities to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls and deliver a genderresponse effort to stem the spread of the COVID19 virus
