Torres del Paine Biosphere Reserve: challenges of a new territory
The Torres del Paine Biosphere Reserve covers more than 770000 hectares between the Andes Mountains and the Patagonian Steppe in southern Chile facing the Atlantic coast It is an area of great scenic beauty with many ridges glaciers waterfalls rivers turquoise lakes and lagoons which receives more than 115000 visitors a year It faces increasingly complex challenges as a result of the rising flow of visitors to the region added to the effects of climate change such as the risks of forest fires and degradation A new book analyzes the challenges faced by the biosphere reserve just over 40 years since UNESCO recognized Torres del Paine National Park as a Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and following its expansion to adapt to the new criteria promoted by the Organization which was approved a few months ago The National Forestry Corporation CONAF in Magallanes Chile launched Reserva de Biosfera Torres del Paine Desafíos de un nuevo territorio pdf in Spanish on 12 August 2020

The Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works site (Chile), removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger
The World Heritage Committee meeting in Baku since 30 June decided to remove the site of Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works Chile from the List of World Heritage in Danger thanks to the national authorities measures to ensure its sustainable conservation and management The Saltpeter Works were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005 and simultaneously on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to the fragility of their buildings the lack of surveillance and maintenance over 40 years and damage caused by high winds Some of the buildings risked collapsing as they were weakened further by an earthquake in 2014 A series of measures have been adopted over the past 15 years by the countrys authorities to improve the situation including the establishment of round the clock surveillance the building of fences around the boundaries of the property the construction of a bypass to stop traffic inside the site and the introduction of security measures for visitors The Committee welcomed these measures as well as the definition of the protective buffer zones the development of a safeguarding strategy and the establishment of a management plan for the site The Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works contain over 200 former saltpeter mining sites where workers from Chile Peru and Bolivia lived in company towns and forged a distinctive communal pampinos culture That culture is manifest in their rich language creativity and solidarity and above all in their pioneering struggle for social justice which had a profound impact on social history Situated in the remote pampas one of the driest deserts on Earth thousands of pampinos lived and worked in this hostile environment for over 60 years starting in 1880 to process the largest deposit of saltpeter in the world producing the fertilizer sodium nitrate that was to transform agricultural lands in North and South America and Europe and produce great wealth for Chile The List of World Heritage in Danger is designed to inform the international community of conditions which threaten the very characteristics for which a property was inscribed on the World Heritage Listbe they due to armed conflicts natural disasters unplanned urbanization poaching pollution or otherand encourage corrective action Article in the World Heritage Centre

1960: Memory saves lives - UNESCO supports activities in commemoration of the Great Earthquake in Valdivia, Chile
Memory allows us not only to bring to the present historical events of the past but to learn from them It is thus important to ask ourselves What have we learned from the disasters How do we prevent deaths from earthquakes and tsunamis How do we commemorate the pandemic 60 years ago Chile was struck by the most powerful earthquake ever recorded With the conviction that commemorating an emergency helps us prepare better for the next on 22 May 2020 the Fundación Proyecto Memoria in collaboration with the Regional Programme of Strengthening Cultural Identity of the Ministry of Culture Arts and Heritage of Chile and with the support of UNESCOs National Office in Chile will organize an event entitled 1960 memory saves lives  This is a virtual event live from the Los Ríos Region the epicenter of the earthquake and constitutes one of the greatest acts of collective resilience in the history of Chile after the 1960 earthquake The daylong event consists of a series of activities where the cultures meet the sciences  Among the commemorative activities include a virtual breakfast between Chilean geographer Marcelo Lagos and survivors of the earthquake and the tsunami in Japan and Chile educational activities for children an online seminar with the presence of scientists and artists discussions on the role of audiovisual archives after disasters among others Further information 1960 memory saves lives in Spanish
