UNESCOs Executive Board has approved the designation of 8 new UNESCO Global Geoparks bringing the number of sites participating in the Global Geoparks Network to 177 in 46 countries Two new countries Luxembourg and Sweden this year join the Global Network with the designation of their first geoparks

MAB summer universities which aim to provide training and develop knowledge on the importance of Biosphere Reserves as learning places for sustainable development have been run by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment Culture and Sustainable Development MIOECSDE in collaboration with the Greek National MAB Committee since 2014 This years edition of the university titled Asterousia Hybrid University with the support of the Heraclion Development Agency and the Region of Crete is to be organized in two phases facetoface and virtual The first phase with attendance of various national and local experts was held from 57 October 2020 in Crete Greece
