Irrigation

Language: Silent film

All vegetation needs water to make it grow, land in which there is no water is dead land. Even in arid regions there are some hidden sources of water and it is necessary to divert water to the dry and thirsty land through canals. The water supply from rainy seasons is stored either in reservoirs or in cisterns. Metal pipes connected to pumps raise the river water to higher levels. Water then floods the land. Water, which is often hundreds of metres below the surface, is pumped up to the surface through Artesian wells, a constant supply of water. The film shows in detail and with the aid of models the best ways to irrigate fields and orchards.
