International Zone: Unlike Their Elders
This film is the first of two reports on the World Youth Assembly held in the United Nations Headquarters in July 1970, see Lars for the second part. In its 25th year, the UN turned to the young people of the world, inviting them to speak their minds on the condition of man and the role of the world organization. In July 1970, 500 participants streamed into New York : For ten days United Nations conference rooms, lobbies and press galleries were pre-empted by young men and women ardently concerned over peace and war, poverty and plenty, the state of the environment, justice and equity. For most of them, this was a first visit to New York and the impact of the city, its contrasts and its glitter, was overwhelming. United Nations Television cameras follow them in debate, down corridors, caught their reactions to each other and to the notables who welcomed them. Opinions vary on what the World Youth Assembly achieved, but the bracing effect of this invasion of territory usually reserved for the mature and the authoritative is undeniable. As U thant put it, The United Nations will never be the same again.
