Music Round the World: The Music of Venezuela

Language: English

This edition of the Music Round the World series showcases a variety of songs, dances, and ceremonies from Venezuela. The first song showcased was recorded on La Margarita Island and was one of the typical songs popular on the Eastern States of Venezuela. Additionally, this program showcases songs popular in El Tocuyo and other villages in the Venezuelan state of Lara where the people celebrate the day of St. Anthony, the patron Saint of farm workers. The second song showcased is called El Tamunangue, which is popular during the St. Anthony festival. The third song presented is also popular during this festival and is called Poco a Poco, which is a satire on courtship. The fourth song featured includes the jaw's harp and the fifth song showcases the harpist, Candelario Perrietto, who was famous for playing music entirely by ear. The next group of recordings in this program are part of initiation ceremonies present in the traditions of the Piaroa peoples of the Upper Orinoco Basin. The sixth song showcases bark horns and the seventh song showcases the masked dance of the Piaroa peoples. The eighth song takes place during the same month of initiation ceremonies at nightfall. The following recordings stem from the act of grinding of cassava roots to make manioc beer for the initiation ceremonies, including the Manioc Scraping Song, and the final initiation song. There is also a strong musical influence from Africa that are most clearly heard the day of Saint Benedict the Black in December and the day of St John in June. This section of recordings features the songs, Tambo Grande, Tambo Ranate, and Tambo Aradondo. The music in this program forms part of the Columbia World Library of Folk and Primitive Music prepared by Alan Lomax. The recordings were made in Venezuela by Juan Lescano and by French explorer, Pierre Geisseau. This program was prepared and distributed by the radio division of UNESCO in Paris with commentary by Keith Wood.
