Talk on African Radio - Harry Franklin

Language: English

This talk outlines the necessary conditions and controls for building radios in Africa, a project started in 1949. The radio set needed to be easy to maintain since repairs would be a problem when radio mechanics were few and far between. Moreover, the set needed to be powerful enough to hear all stations. After a long search, Franklin's team managed to create a radio set they could market with the battery for just over £6. About 30,000 of these sets had been sold in central Africa with over 400,000 listeners in 1953. With the number of listeners expanding rapidly at the time, they improved and expanded the broadcasting service. Broadcasting time increased to 7 hours a day, while broadcasting in different native languages. Franklin's team introduced a five-year plan for educational talks on health and agriculture.
