Policy Nerd E01. Recalibrate – our policies were too heavy on efficiency, too light on equity

Language: English

This episode has as guests professor Doug Elmendorf, former dean of Harvard Kennedy School, and Don K. Price, professor of Public Policy since 2016 and former director of the US Congressional Budget Office.
The host is Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO’s assistant director-general for Social and Human Sciences. Together they talk about what it would take to reset equitably after COVID-19, how herd thinking (amongst experts and beyond) hurts us, and why trust in science is to be restored if the intent is to move ahead smartly. They also discuss how pre-pandemic policies were focused too much on efficiency and not enough on equity. Recalibration of priorities is needed on the sides of both the knowledge producers and the policy makers.

The Policy Nerd series introduces listeners to leading thinkers as they debate concrete policy options for such a recovery and take stock of the data that could (and should) inform these policy shifts.
