UNESCO General Conference in New Delhi, November 1956

Language: English

Luther Evans, the director-general of UNESCO, discusses the upcoming ninth session of the General Conference, to be held in New Delhi from 5 November to 5 December, 1956. The General Conference of UNESCO meets every two years and includes delegates from UNESCO’s member states. These delegates form the chief policy making body of UNESCO. The purposes of the Conference are to review the work accomplished in the two previous years and decide on UNESCO’s budget programme and major projects for the upcoming two years (1957 and 1958). The ninth General Conference is significant because it coincides with the tenth anniversary of UNESCO and marks the first time a General Conference has been hosted further east than the Mediterranean. Evans concludes by discussing the already proposed areas of focus for the upcoming two years and the significance of India’s participation in UNESCO’s work, particularly in education and scientific work.
