Rex Keating interviews Franck Wilkinson, the art director of the Arab States Fundamental Education Centre (ASFEC) in Sirs Al Layyanah, Egypt. Now an autonomous public organization titled the Regional Centre for Adult Education, the centre provides training to students who work as teachers and educators in rural areas, and also produces audiovisual aids which are used to teach local residents. Through fundamental education, ASFEC aims to improve the health and financial wellbeing of residents through basic knowledge. ASFEC was the second fundamental education centre established by UNESCO, the first being the Regional Fundamental Education centre Latin America (CREFAL) in Mexico, now the Regional Cooperation Centre for Adult Education in Latin America and the Caribbean.
