Greece - Zagori Cultural Landscape
Located in a remote rural landscape in northwestern Greece, small stone villages known as Zagorochoria extend along the western slopes of the northern part of the Pindus mountain range. These traditional villages, typically organized around a central square containing a plane tree and surrounded by sacred forests maintained by local communities, showcase a traditional architecture adapted to the mountain topography.
The biodiversity of this mixed property is characterized by a high level of species endemicity and the presence of emblematic species of flora and fauna. It includes a diverse mosaic of habitats with extensive forests, undisturbed rivers and ravines, as well as areas of Mediterranean vegetation. The area is home to the Pindos Bright Bush-cricket (Poecilimon pindos), Brown Bear (Ursus arctos), and the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra).
