When Leibniz said that «... everywhere everything is the same as here», he was already acknowledging that there is but one humanity on Earth: there is no "elsewhere" anymore. This emergent sense of global unity has actually provided a stimulus to human travel. Humans yearn to experience and to partake in their common heritage. Travel gives tangible form to this experience. It facilitates encounters and, in so doing, helps to create a unified vision of human development. The future of human development and cultural diversity depends on whether this unity is forged in ways that are fraternal or invasive, sustainable or abrasive, fertile or sterile.
