Meeting of Experts on the Treatment of Asian Cultures in Western Textbooks and Teaching Material
The recording begins with the nomination and election of Mr. Hartshorn as chairman. Luther Evans then leads the meeting and discusses UNESCO’s concern for the contents of textbooks and the hope to improve international understanding through education. The first approach was to remove errors from textbooks and aim to have the truth taught to children, even if historical events were not pleasant and relationships between countries were not positive. The other approach was to include subjects that had been ignored in textbooks. Preliminary work was to focus on the treatment of Asian cultures in Western textbooks. Dr. Evans concludes his speech by discussing the future establishment of a committee to solve problems pertaining to school curriculums.
