John Irving reports on a plan by two experts from the Netherlands, engineer de Beaufort and the geologist Voort, who were working on UNESCO's project to save ancient Egyptian and Nubian monuments from being destroyed by flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan Dam. Their plan involved building dykes to prevent the island of Philae from being submerged.
