The Taj Mahal, the mausoleum built in the seventeen century near Agra in northern India by the Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Numtaz Mahal, is considered to be the finest example of Indo—Islamic architecture. Started in 1631 and built entirely in white marble, the monument took twelve years to complete.
