This video presents the Open Doors: Portuguese for Immigrants project, a joint initiative between the Municipal Secretary of Human Rights and Citizenship (SMDHC) and the Municipal Secretary of Education (SME), developed within the municipal public policies in the city of São Paulo.
From the voices of education professionals and migrant students of different nationalities, one can get to know this project characterized by the continuous and permanent offer of a free Portuguese course taught by volunteer teachers from the Municipal Education Network (RME) for migrant students. The project aims to guarantee the right to education of the immigrant population of São Paulo, thus ensuring the fulfilment of other rights linked to their integration through the Portuguese language, such as insertion in the formal job market and the promotion of migration regularization.
Representatives of UNESCO in Brazil and UNHCR highlight the importance of the experience in their statements.
This video is part of UNESCO's initiative in Brazil to present successful Brazilian experiences of education for refugees and migrants developed within the scope of early childhood education, indigenous education and the teaching of the Portuguese language to young people and adults. Its objective is to disseminate good practices to achieve the Education 2030 Agenda of “leaving no one behind” by inclusively guaranteeing the right to education, as provided for in Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4).
