On 22 March, a Report by the Director-General of UNESCO on the Safety of Journalists and the Danger of Impunity, will be presented to the Council of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

Statistics gathered by UNESCO testify to the staggering number of journalists and media workers killed while performing their professional duties.

The Report notes that in most cases, these journalists were reporting on local stories, particularly related to corruption and other illegal activities such as organized crime.

UN World Water Development Report

Unprecedented growth in demands for water are threatening all major development goals, warns the latest edition of the UN World Water Development Report, Managing Water under Uncertainty and Risk.

It notes that rising food demand, rapid urbanization and climate change are significantly increasing pressure on global water supplies. This complex situation requires a radical rethink of the way water is managed, concludes the Report


International Women’s day 2012

On the occasion of the International Women’s day 2012, UNESCO launched its latest publication on gender equality: the UNESCO World Atlas of Gender Equality in Education.

With over 120 maps, charts and tables, the UNESCO World Atlas of Gender Equality in Education enables readers to visualize the educational pathways of girls and boys in terms of access, participation and progression from pre-primary to tertiary education.


On 6 March, MEP Kriton ARSENIS and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO are pleased to invite you at the European Parliament to debate on Oceans at Rio+20.

Maria DAMANAKI, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, and Wendy Watson-Wright, Assistant Director-General UNESCO and Executive Secretary of IOC, will participate at this event.


UNESCO Brussels Office, one year after

This week, the UNESCO Office in Brussels celebrates its first anniversary. One year ago, Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, inaugurated the UNESCO Representation to the European Union, stressing in her speech for a strategic partnership between UNESCO and the European Union.
