World Heritage and Sustainable Development: the Role of Local Communities
The UNESCO Venice Office, in close cooperation with the national authorities of Montenegro (Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, National Commission of Montenegro for UNESCO) and with the support of the Veneto Region, convened on 7-8 June in Kotor, Montenegro, a regional meeting of experts, local stakeholders and site managers for the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
Placed under the theme of “World Heritage and Sustainable Development: the Role of Local Communities”, this celebration offered an opportunity to reinforce joint efforts towards the development of effective policies and practices for the better management of cultural and natural heritage and all UNESCO designated sites, with a special focus on participatory approaches and community engagement. This meeting served to share experiences, good practices and planned activities concerning the management of World Heritage and other UNESCO designated sites (MAB Biosphere Reserves) in South-East Europe, with a strong focus on the role of communities in the identification, management and conservation of such sites. It took place in the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, Montenegro, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979.
