UNESCO mobilizes female military personnel from Africa to protect cultural property in the peacekeeping process
Organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo MONUSCO and the Ministry of Culture Arts and Heritage of the Democratic Republic of the Congo a regional capacitybuilding workshop on the protection of cultural property was held in Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo from July 26 to 28 2023 The workshop brought together 20 female participants from different backgrounds from 12 countries from all over the continent including Benin Central African Republic Djibouti Ethiopia Gabon Ghana Kenya Madagascar Nigeria Seychelles Republic of Tanzania and Togo together with representatives of MONUSCO and the National Advisory Committee for the protection of cultural properties in the event of armed conflict in DRC This important exercise is the first of its kind in subSaharan Africa particularly in view of its contribution to gender equality and recognition of the role of women as active agents of peacekeeping through culture in times of armed conflict and peace
