The Liber Sancti Jacobi is a fivebook compilation of texts related to apostle St James and the pilgrimage to his shrine in Compostela in northwest of the Iberian PeninsulaScholars believe that the manuscript kept in Compostela was compiled between 1138 and 1173 and is considered the eldest and more complete version of this work It is also known as Codex Calixtinus as it was attributed to Pope Calixtus II or Compostellanus denominations reserved to this codex Other medieval copies of the Liber preserved in Spanish and Portuguese cultural institutions are also included in this nomination as they are all part of the same textual and cultural tradition The Codex is a source for the knowledge of European medieval religiosity and culture It served to the support and promotion of the cult of St James and the Camino de Santiago as one of the greatest Christian pilgrimage routes in a model repeated later by the Canterbury Tales It is also connected to the mythical figure of Charlemagne and the medieval epic literature of the chanson de geste giving a European dimension to the text
