Derek Alton Walcott 19302017 was born in Castries St Lucia but lived and worked in Trinidad and Tobago for a number of years In 1959 Walcott founded the Little Carib Theatre Workshop which later became the Trinidad Theatre Workshop TTW In 1992 he became the second person from the Caribbean to receive a Nobel Prize Literature Sir Dereks sterling contribution to the development of Caribbean literature includes published poems essays plays and literary reviews Through his work Walcott sought to create a literature that represented the lived experiences of West Indians He was also an artist creating many paintings sketches and theatre sets This fonds covers Walcotts career in Trinidad and Tobago and represents the history of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop Included in this inscription is information on much of his poetry and prose up to 1981 as well as reviews of his work in the 1990s This archive is also rich in photographic material Walcott is the recipient of several civil awards In 1972 he was named by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II an Officer of the Order of the British Empire OBE In 1992 he was awarded by the Caribbean Community CARICOM the Order of the Caribbean Community OCC and in 2016 he was named a Knight Commander of the Order of St Lucia KCSL Walcott has also received several honours and awards for his professional work This inscription is noteworthy in another respect Derek Walcotts twin Roderick is also an artist of renown in his own right Derek and Roderick are the only set of twins to have their work individually registered on any of the Registers of the Memory of the WorldThe Derek Walcott Collection was inscribed in the Memory of the World International Register in 1997 and the Memory of the World Trinidad and Tobago Register in 2010
