World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
Threequarters of the worlds major conflicts have a cultural dimension Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent for peace and development Cultural diversity is a driving force of development not only with respect to economic growth but also as a means of leading a fulfilling intellectual moral and spiritual life In 2001 UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002 the UN General Assembly in its resolution 57249 declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development In the message on the occasion of World Day for Cultural Diversity celebrations Ms Audrey Azoulay DirectorGeneral of UNESCO said this years World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated in the context of uncertainty and anxiety However by dint of coordinated action original initiatives and creativity this imposed downtime has made it possible to see what is one of humanitys riches our diversity At the end of the same message reaffirmed the UNESCO appeals to all together let us celebrate and support cultural diversity symbol of our humanity
