UNESCO Dakar's mission in the field of education is to support countries in strengthening their education and learning systems with a view to achieving MDG4 as well as the education-related targets of other MDGs, in line with the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the Continental Strategy on Education for Africa (CESA 2016-2025).

UNESCO Dakar helps Member States in the Sahel region to develop the capacities and policies needed for sustainable socio-economic development that respects the environment and meets the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, more specifically MDGs 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 15 and 17.

Promoting cultural heritage

UNESCO Dakar focuses its action on the protection and promotion of World Heritage sites, particularly in the event of armed conflict, but also on the fight against illicit trafficking, the protection and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and support for creative industries, based on the governance mechanisms established by the UNESCO Conventions in the field of culture.

Promoting the free flow of ideas

UNESCO Dakar is committed to promoting freedom of expression, media development (public, private, community and online), and access to information and knowledge, in line with UNESCO's mandate to "promote the free flow of ideas by word and image". Our programmes contribute directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (including SDGs 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16 and 17) set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a particular focus on change.
