This documentary holding represents a crucial part of the history of Argentina It is unique and representative of an era 19671983 that bears witness to a history of human rights and freedom violations ideological political and religious persecution lived simultaneously in several Latin American countries The collection includes original documents manuscripts pamphlets flyers posters photographs and videos It is complemented by writings published on the subject from 1967 to 2010 The main content is comprised of two parts a the Carlos Francisco Mugica Archive an Argentine priest who carried out his pastoral activity in slums and with humanitarian groups He was the most representative advocate of the Movement of Priests for the Third World MSTM With his unorthodox style his humour his ability to communicate in public his dedication to the poor and his courage he achieved the sympathy of many and provoked the irritation of the powerful He was assassinated in 1974 His death was controversial becoming the symbol of a generation the first martyr of the MSTM Mugica became a point of reference for a crucial stage in Argentine history and b the Movement of Priests for the Third World MSTM Archive and other related and subsequent topics This movement of priests was related to lay groups These lay groups in turn influenced or supported by the MSTM established links with groups of aboriginals populations of the slums and rural areas giving rise to initiatives of social and political movements or movements related to sectors of armed struggle This documentary heritage is valuable for students of state terrorism repressive subversive and human rights violation processes in Argentina in particular and Latin America in general
