About the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in Brazil

Last update:11 May 2023

On 19 August 2013, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace through Resolution A/67/L.77.

UNESCO has always understood sports and physical education as important for forming values, socialization and human development. UNESCO's constitutive act (1945) reminds us that “if war is born in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed”; thus, there is no better tool to promote dialogue and cooperation than sports. Practising sports reinforces virtuous values, such as fair play, companionship and team spirit.

On this International Day, our Organization celebrates the virtues and universal values of sport, and would like to recall how much sports practice, which allows us to have “a healthy mind in a healthy body”, also carries an ethic of living together and of peace – an ethic that we particularly need in these troubled times.
