Colombia - Intangible Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Development

Colombia

The braiding tradition of the Zenú people, in the department of Sucre, is part of the cultural legacy that since the pre-Hispanic period has been transmitted from generation to generation, reflecting their worldview and relationship with the territory through craftsmanship.

This manifestation contemplates many steps, from the process of planting and harvesting the fiber of caña flecha (Gynerium sagitatum), to the process of preparation for the braiding. Its most famous product, the "vueltiao" hat, is recognized worldwide. This manifestation contributes to the productive development, the sustainable use of soils and sustainable tourism in the area.
