Heritage is not only represented by documents and places, but perpetually recreated as people, experts and institutions remember and reinterpret the meaning of the past in view of their aspirations for the present and future.
As it is local communities who have served as guardians of the region’s heritage over the years, UNESCO is committed to ensuring community engagement is at the heart of the MoW Programme’s documentary heritage preservation in AlUla.
UNESCO in AlUla
In a recent mission to AlUla, UNESCO personnel had the opportunity to meet with local community members and leaders as well as expert preservationists and practitioners. The mission served as a foundation for additional collaboration activities and to facilitate further documentation of AlUla’s inscriptions in order to ensure equitable and universal access to its documentary heritage.
