1st Participatory Journey integrates community into the IlhaMuseu project

Museum in Brazil

UNESCO promotes the 1st edition of participatory sessions - Participatory Journeys - to create IlhaMuseu, a Museum of the North Coast of São Paulo in Ilhabela. The first Participatory Journey occurs in Ilhabela on 14-15 June 2023. The event will discuss the values and mission of the future museum with the community and local institutions. Furthermore, the Participatory Journeys align with the proposal for International Museum Day (18 May) observed by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). In 2023 this international day is dedicated to the theme “Museums, sustainability and well-being”.

Organized in partnership with the Foundation for Conservation and Forest Production of the State of São Paulo (Fundação Florestal), the event will be the first of a series of sessions aimed at sharing and dialoguing with the community in the municipalities of Ilhabela, São Sebastião, Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba (São Paulo state, Brazil). The expectation is that the consultations, convened via public call and held in each of the municipalities on the North Coast, will establish an effective dialogue, listening to proposals, suggestions and expectations from local institutions, traditional communities, and civil society in general to promote partnerships for strengthening the project.

About the IlhaMuseu Project

IlhaMuseu is a project developed by UNESCO in partnership with the Fundação Florestal to create a museum on Ilha das Cabras (Goat Island) to value the cultural and natural heritage of the North Coast of São Paulo state, recognizing the sustainable practices of traditional people living in the region. The Public Ministry of the State of São Paulo proposed this project to restore access to Ilha das Cabras for the local population after around thirty years of its irregular private occupation.

Ilha das Cabras

Located in the Integral Protection Conservation Unit of Ilhabela State Park, Ilha das Cabras is an integral part of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, also a natural World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO. The biodiversity conservation of and other natural attributes of the Atlantic Forest, the appreciation of social diversity, and the anthropological and cultural heritage that make up this Biosphere Reserve are among the fundamental principles of the IlhaMuseu project. The entire musealization process of Ilha das Cabras is scheduled for completion in 2026.
