Ambassadors from the UN Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning lead the #ImALifelongLearner Campaign at the SDG Summit

Education and lifelong learning stand are not only at the heart of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 but are also fundamental pillars critical to the realization of all 17 SDGs by 2030. However, as the world reaches the midway point of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, progress toward SDG 4 and many other SDGs remains inadequate.

To address this challenge, leaders from governments worldwide will convene on 18 and 19 September 2023, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, for the SDG Summit. This high-level gathering will deliberate on the advancements and setbacks concerning the SDGs, including SDG 4, based on the outcomes of the Transforming Education Summit in 2022. It will mark the beginning of a new phase of transformative and accelerated action dedicated to expediting progress towards these goals in the run-up to 2030.

To underscore the paramount significance of SDG 4, the Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning at the United Nations, will spearhead the #ImALifelongLearner campaign during the Summit. The Group comprises ambassadors from 37 UN Member States, who are united by their strong dedication to the promotion of SDG 4. The campaign showcases the value of learning for individuals of all ages, genders and backgrounds from every corner of the world. During the Summit, ambassadors to the United Nations will convey why lifelong learning is important not just to them personally but also to their respective countries and sustainable development of the world at large.

The campaign supports the call by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for the formal recognition of a universal entitlement to lifelong learning and reskilling in his recent policy brief, Our Common Agenda: Transforming Education
