Call For Nominations: Indigenous Peoples to Join the Global Task Force for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages

UNESCO has announced a Call targeting Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Peoples’ organizations worldwide.
Indigenous Peoples to Join the Global Task Force for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages

The call aims to invite them to nominate representatives who will contribute to the Global Task Force, an entity responsible for bringing the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to fruition.

The International Decade of Indigenous Languages, spanning from 2022 to 2032, is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting Indigenous languages.  Language serves as a vessel for people to encapsulate their worldviews, collective memory, traditional knowledge and distinctive modes of thinking, meaning and expression.

The Global Task Force is established as an international governance mechanism, to ensure equitable participation of all stakeholders in the International Decade. The task force offers advice and guidance on the preparation, planning, implementation and monitoring of progress towards achieving the objectives of the Global Action Plan for the Decade.

The task force members serve a three-year term, with a subgroup forming the Steering Committee each year. Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Peoples' Organizations are encouraged to nominate three representatives for each of the seven socio-cultural regions, as outlines in Human Rights Council Resolution 33/25. One representative from each region will have the opportunity to serve on the Steering Committee each year.
