Project

Canal Novo Mundo

Thaiane Maciel’s idea? To raise awareness and clean up public spaces in an easy and fun way. She created Canal Novo Mundo and her enthusiasm is contagious.

Every day, Guanabara Bay receives around 90 tons of debris produced by seven municipalities. But this region of Rio de Janeiro suffers from the lack of social and environmental education initiatives for the local population.

Canal Novo Mundo was born in 2015, during an Environmental Education class of Thaiane’s undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering at UFRJ. The idea was to be a channel that produces educational content for social media in an easy and fun way. The project promotes awareness and clean-up actions on the beaches and public spaces of Rio de Janeiro, involving young people and adults.

Tons of waste collected

This project has a great positive impact on the city of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the Ilha do Governador neighborhood. It has been duplicated in São Paulo, Espírito Santo and Bahia. Canal Novo Mundo promoted more than 250 cleaning actions involving more than 1,500 volunteers in 80 points of the city, during which over 130 tons of waste were collected.

Despite all these actions, the citizens who lead this initiative deplore the lack of support from local companies and public authorities. Large amounts of waste being dumped daily in the places where they carry out actions. To increase its impact, participate in public opinion, and raise funds, the project is structured as an NGO. The objective: to have an impact on 5,000 people and eliminate an average of 1 ton of waste per action.
