By supporting schools and training teachers, Classroom Africa raises awareness about the importance of protecting the environment, while involving the wider community in local conservation initiatives.

Many rural areas close to critical wildlife habitats don’t have good school infrastructure and levels of illiteracy are high. This situation limits opportunities explain the importance of conservation, foster homegrown leaders and involve locals in managing environmental challenges.

Since being launched in 2013, Classroom Africa, supported by the African Wildlife Foundation, has worked to improve access to education in partnership with local governments, wildlife authorities and companies. Although the Classroom Africa programme focuses on primary school students, it also aims to involve the wider community in protecting local wildlife and habitats.

Impacts across 6 African countries

Every year, Classroom Africa helps 5,000 children by supporting existing schools, creating new ones, providing teaching & learning materials, training teachers and delivering conservation education programmes, as well as offering a secondary education scholarship for 7 conservation champions from Africa.

The project is already helping children and local communities in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, DRC and Zambia. Moving forwards, Classroom Africa would like to reach out to Zimbabwe and Cameroon to support a total of 11,000 students each year.
