This document briefly addresses both extracurricular and intracurricular factors associated with school disengagement. It presents a selection of best practices in Latin America aimed at improving student retention and school permanence. Subsequently, as another best practice, it introduces the Pedagogical Tutoring Program implemented in 2020 in the Valparaíso region (Chile) by the Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago), the Chilean Ministry of Education (Mineduc), and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV). Based on the evaluation report of this tutoring program, its findings and main lessons are presented.

The best practices showcased in this document agree on promoting a comprehensive approach to the problem of school disengagement. They share a common denominator in the role of the tutor, particularly the tutor-student relationship and the educational community as central components of their strategies. At the end of the document, the conclusions revisit the lessons learned from the experiences presented with recommendations for future actions.
