“Dialogues about the Future”: Addressing Water Challenges in Uruguay

The "Dialogues about the Future of Water in Uruguay” event will provide a unique platform for reflection and exchange, focusing on the country's key opportunities and challenges in achieving the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This initiative, organized by UN Uruguay and coordinated by the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program of UNESCO in Latin America and the Caribbean (PHI-LAC), aligns with the United Nations' mandate to promote sustainable development.

It aims to enhance understanding of the social, economic, and environmental challenges and opportunities that Uruguay will face in the coming decades.

The event is scheduled to take place on June 7th from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Mercosur Building in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The "Dialogues about the Future" event intends to engage a diverse range of stakeholders from Uruguayan society. By transcending fragmented analyses of productive, social, and environmental spheres, the event encourages in-depth reflections on pending challenges and potential solutions. It seeks to foster new ways of thinking that are compatible with sustainable development.

As part of the cooperation framework, this dialogue series aims to complement existing initiatives and deepen reflections on essential topics for advancing Uruguay's leap towards development. Working collaboratively with UN Uruguay, the United Nations agencies have already prioritized various critical themes for promoting sustainable development in Uruguay, including dialogues on the climate crisis, social and solidarity economy, gender equality, and sustainable economy.

The upcoming "Dialogues about the Future" event will specifically focus on the central theme of water Water, as a vital resource with transversal importance for social, economic, and ecological development, will take center stage during the dialogue.

The event will gather experts, government officials, and representatives from civil society to analyze the present challenges and propose future-oriented responses. Issues to be addressed include access to clean water and sanitation for dispersed populations, efficient water management in agriculture and industry, capacity development for water-related professionals, drought mapping and vulnerability assessments, blue economy initiatives, environmental flow requirements, demonstrative sites for ecohydrology, water quality monitoring, fostering a new water culture, the need for new legal frameworks in the context of drought and transboundary cooperation, and the management of transboundary aquifers. The event aims to stimulate collaboration and propose actionable measures that strengthen water governance in Uruguay.
