Director-General condemns murder of journalists Yessenia Mollinedo Falconi and Sheila Johana García Olivera in Mexico
I condemn the killings of Yessenia Mollinedo and Sheila García. Journalists are witness bearers whose work provides an indispensable contribution to public dialogue and peaceful societies. I call on the authorities to investigate these murders and to take all necessary measures to ensure journalists can do this important work without fear.
Both reporters worked for local online portal El Veraz, which Yessenia Mollinedo Falconi also directed. Eleven journalists and media workers have been killed in Mexico so far this year, including 3 women journalists.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity
