UNESCO is pleased to co-host the fifth edition of the Athens Roundtable on AI and the Rule of Law organized by The Future Society. This year's event will be held in Washington D.C. on November 30th and December 1st, 2023. This international, multi-stakeholder forum has been the premier platform for discussing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Rule of Law, focusing on legal, judicial, and compliance systems.

About the Event

The Athens Roundtable was co-founded in 2019 by The Future Society under the aegis of the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic. Over four editions, it has convened dialogues with over 3,600 stakeholders from 120 countries—including representatives from the European Parliament, UNESCO, OECD, Council of Europe, IEEE, and European Commission, as well as national governments, the private sector, and civil society.

Fifth Edition Partners

In 2023, The Athens Roundtable will be organized by The Future Society and co-hosted by the Institute for International Science and Technology Policy (IISTP) at the Elliott School of International Affairs, the NIST-NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS), UNESCO, OECD, IEEE, Homo Digitalis, the Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP), Paul, Weiss LLP, and the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. It will proudly be held under the aegis of the Embassy of Greece in Washington D.C.

Fifth Edition Topics

Building on our track record, this year’s edition aims to:

  • Discuss a comprehensive approach to the governance of generative AI and foundation models, including safety assessments, security measures, and regulatory strategies from development to deployment.

  • Examine how international coordination and institutional innovation can counteract geopolitical and market pressures in AI governance, all while upholding fundamental rights.
