Fourth Global Media and Information Literacy Youth Hackathon

The UNESCO annual Global Media and Information Literacy Week is a major occasion for stakeholders to review, chart new paths, and celebrate the progress achieved towards media and information literacy for all.

UNESCO strives to equip youth with media and information literacy competencies, which enhance youth’s capacities to access and verify information and media content and to harness the power of digital technology. When empowered, youth can be co-leaders, co-creators, and peer-educators of media and information literacy development and diffusion. Media and information literate youth can contribute to building a more resilient and better future, alongside their seniors.

This year, the Youth Agenda Forum will be happening throughout the Global Media and Information Literacy Week from 24 to 31 October in Abuja, Nigeria  and online. The Forum will center around the topic of “Media and Information Literate Youth Engaging in Nurturing Trust and Solidarity”.

The Global Media and Information Literacy Youth Hackathon is an opportunity for young people and youth organizations around the world to participate in the creation of innovative media and information literacy learning in meaningful ways.

UNESCO and partners are calling on youth worldwide from 18 to 35 years old to participate in this virtual hackathon to design innovative solutions to a defined set of social challenges, in connection with the areas below:

  1. Promoting Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces 
  2. Media and Information Literacy within Youth Organizations: Youth Championing Media and Information Literacy in Cities
  3. Innovative Ideas/solutions on media and information literacy to nurture trust in establish institutions

The winning teams of the Hackathon will be presented during the Global Media and Information Literacy Week Youth Agenda Forum on October 27 at 10 a.m Paris time and will receive recognition through a UNESCO press release and various media channels.

Registration ends on 3 October 2022. All participating teams will receive a certificate of participation.
