GEO4CIVHIC Summer School: Heating and cooling our buildings with green energy

On 28 September 2023, the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe will host this year’s GEO4CIVHIC Summer School under the theme of ‘Heating and cooling our buildings with green energy’. The event will bring secondary school and university students into conversation with technology experts, engineers and demonstration site managers in order to facilitate knowledge-sharing in relation to geothermal energy systems.

GEO4CIVHIC (Most easy, efficient and Low Cost Geothermal Systems for Retrofitting Civil and Historical Buildings) is the culmination of a 4-year lifespan Innovation Action (IA) project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The project is intended to explore new opportunities for improving the efficiency and installation of geothermal systems within historical and residential buildings. Every year, a summer school is held to support young people (mainly students in upper-secondary school and university) wanting to learn more about innovative technologies in geothermal and renewable energy. The event allows participants to gain new skills, engage in discussions with experts in the field, and discover possible educational and career-based opportunities in geothermal energy.

The theme of this year’s summer school is ‘Heating and cooling our buildings with green energy’. Presentations and discussions will explore the application of geothermal power systems in historical and civil buildings, where existing heating and cooling systems are often inadequate and/or outdated. Four demonstration sites will be used to help participants ground ideas and concepts in case studies: 3 historical buildings in Italy, Ireland and Malta, and 1 residential building in Belgium. The event will allow for networking and knowledge dissemination amongst both teachers and learners, and act as a platform for innovative renewable energy initiatives and achievements to be showcased.
